[Part -1]: Do Kundalis Really Match? Scientific Truth Behind Kundali Matching Before Marriage

Do Kundalis Really Match

Presented at the International Astrology Conference (March 20–22, 2025) by Banaras Hindu University, Faculty of Dharma Studies and Department of Astrology

In India, Kundali Matching or Melapak is a centuries-old tradition practiced before marriage. It is believed that matching horoscopes leads to a successful and harmonious married life. While this belief has deep roots in scriptures, it’s equally important to understand the scientific and psychological logic behind this practice in today’s modern context.

Let’s explore how Kundali Matching works, what makes it scientifically relevant, and how modern astrologers interpret its results for compatibility in marriage.

Why Is Kundali Matching Done Before Marriage?

Kundali Matching analyzes the compatibility between the bride and groom on various levels—mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. It’s not just about rituals; it helps assess temperament, nature, and how both partners are likely to deal with life’s challenges together.

According to astrology, mismatched energies (like pairing a fire sign with a water sign) can lead to clashes. Therefore, planetary alignments and nakshatras (constellations) are analyzed to ensure compatibility.

Two Main Kundali Matching Systems in India

  1. Ashtakoot Milan (North India)
  2. Dashakoot Milan (South India)

This article focuses on Ashtakoot Milan, which is based on matching eight critical aspects, each assigned specific points—totaling 36 points. A minimum of 18 points is considered acceptable for marriage.

What Are the 8 Ashtakoot Factors in Kundali Matching?

1. Varna (Caste/Nature Classification)

It categorizes people based on zodiac signs:

  • Brahmin: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
  • Kshatriya: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
  • Vaishya: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
  • Shudra: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

If the bride and groom belong to the same varna, emotional understanding and energy flow in the same direction.

2. Vashya (Dominance Factor)

Analyzes control and influence dynamics between the couple.

3. Tara (Star Compatibility)

Focuses on luck and destiny. It divides the 27 nakshatras into 9 groups. Combinations like Vipat, Pratyari, and Vadha should be avoided.

4. Yoni (Mental Compatibility)

Represents sexual compatibility and mental inclinations based on animal symbolism of nakshatras.

5. Grah Maitri (Planetary Friendship)

Examines mutual bonding and harmony based on the ruling planets of both charts.

6. Gana (Temperament)

There are three categories:

  • Deva (Divine)
  • Manushya (Human)
  • Rakshasa (Demonic)

Conflicts arise when the temperaments clash, e.g., Deva-Rakshasa pairings.

7. Bhakoot (Love & Prosperity)

Calculated based on Moon signs, it shows long-term affection, mutual growth, and family happiness.

8. Nadi (Health & Genetics)

It evaluates physical health, fertility, and genetic compatibility. It’s given the highest score of 8 out of 36.

Minimum Score Required for Marriage

Out of 36 total points:

  • Minimum acceptable score: 18
  • Ideal score: 24+

However, if certain doshas (defects) like Nadi Dosha, Bhakoot Dosha, or Gana Dosha are present, remedies or exceptions can increase the effective score.

Understanding & Resolving Doshas in Modern Kundali Matching

1. Nadi Dosha Remedies

According to Vivah Kautuhal, if the ruling planets (like Venus, Jupiter, Mercury) are favorable or same, Nadi Dosha becomes ineffective. Also, if both partners are born in specific nakshatras (e.g., Rohini, Magha, Vishakha), the dosha may not apply.

Note: Nadi Dosha is only considered relevant for Brahmin varna signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).

2. Bhakoot Dosha Remedies

Bhakoot Dosha is often canceled if the Moon sign’s degrees (Charan) differ or if signs are mutual friends. Bhakoot holds 7 points.

3. Gana Dosha Remedies

Only applies strongly to signs within the Vaishya varna group. Outside these signs, its impact is minimal. Gana holds 6 points.

Example Case of Score Adjustment

Let’s say a couple scores only 9 points initially. That means major doshas (Nadi, Bhakoot, Gana) exist.

If remedies are applied:

  • All three doshas canceled: Add 6+7+8 = 21
    New score = 9 + 21 = 30 (Marriage approved)
  • Two doshas canceled (e.g., Gana + Nadi): Add 6+8 = 14
    New score = 9 + 14 = 23 (Marriage likely approved)

This approach shows Ashtakoot Milan is a guide, not a strict rule.

Conclusion: Is Kundali Matching Still Relevant Today?

Yes, Ashtakoot Kundali Matching is still relevant, but it should be viewed as a mirror of probabilities, not a final judgment. Every horoscope has both strengths and weaknesses. Success in marriage doesn’t depend solely on horoscope scores—it’s also about mutual respect, communication, and personal efforts.

By understanding and working on positive planetary combinations, while minimizing negative ones through remedies or mutual efforts, couples can lead a fulfilling life.

Final Thought: Even Lord Brahma cannot change a person’s horoscope but humans can change the outcome by taking responsibility, fulfilling duties, and walking the path together.
